Build on bonds

At the heart of every brilliant brand lies a bond. Not just a logo, typeface or clever copy, but something much deeper. Bonds are what turn one-time buyers into lifelong customers. It’s the feeling of being understood. And strangely enough, the same principles that build great brands also shape the way agencies like ours run behind the scenes.
I’m sure other agencies would agree – the impact isn’t just in the work that goes out of the door, it’s in the environment that makes that work possible. Just as the strongest brands invite people in rather than talk straight at them, the best agency cultures are built on inclusion, trust and belonging. Whilst everyone is busy working on the work, there’s something truly important in making sure that everyone feels part of something bigger.
Culture can’t thrive with ineffective communication, negative behaviours and poor leadership. It’s built through everyday rituals – team Spotify playlists, all the lols, celebrating the wins, providing space to genuinely connect and holding meaningful conversations (to name only a few). It’s these little touchpoints that create consistency and trust, the same way a well-loved brand does. Behind the scenes, that means shaping processes that feel human. Onboarding that welcomes. Reviews that are about growth, not just performance. Support that goes beyond the tick-box.
We know that the most powerful brand relationships are emotional, not transactional, and it’s fair to say the same applies to agency life. When our people feel proud of the work they do, and are respected by their teammates, that’s where the magic happens. Culture becomes the invisible thread that pulls great work out of great people. It takes strategy to build it, just like a brand. Clarity around values. Space for creativity. Systems that work but don’t suffocate. Time to reflect. Permission to laugh (loudly). An environment where people can show up as themselves, feel safe when mistakes happen, and know that their voice is heard.

Behind the scenes, there’s a whole lot of intentionality. People teams, operations folk, number crunchers – quietly working away supporting the agency in other ways. They’re not always front and centre, but they’re helping tune the experience. Turning feedback into action. Noticing when someone seems a little off. Creating space to listen, reset and reconnect.
As Jeff Bezos famously said, “your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room” – the same goes for the workplace. When it’s working well, people feel it in every interaction. And when it’s not, well… that bond starts to fray. But when there’s care, consistency and a spark of creative spirit, that’s where real loyalty lives. Because in the end, brands build bonds. But people? People build them first – in the way we treat each other, the energy we bring to projects, and the culture behind the curtain. If we get that part right, our clients and their customers feel it too – in the clarity of our work, the strength of our ideas, and the trust that holds it all together.
